Community College to Retrain Ex-Coal Miners

by Associated Press

TAZEWELL, Va. — A Virginia community college is getting $1.4 million from the federal government to help out-of-work coal miners find new jobs.

The grant will fund a program at Southwest Virginia Community College that will teach former coal miners the skills they need to get jobs in high-demand fields.

The program will allow workers to get skills in advanced manufacturing, construction and health technology in just four months.

The money is being provided through the Partnership for Opportunity and Workforce and Economic Revitalization grant program. The Thompson Charitable Fund and Virginia Tobacco Commission will also provide funds to support the displaced coal miner program.
