What Paper? College Cuts Off Funds for Publication Almost No One Reads

BEND, Ore. — A community college in Oregon is cutting funding to its students newspaper because of lack of interest from both readers and potential student staff members.

The Bulletin reported that a Central Oregon Community College spokesman, Ron Paradis, says most young people don’t read newspapers.

The decision will effectively end publication of The Broadside. A survey found that more than half of the school’s students didn’t know the newspaper existed, and only 7 percent read it consistently. The paper’s staff had shrunk to 10 students from 20 writers in its heyday.

The college offers two-year associate degrees and enrolls about 16,500 students on its Bend-area campus.
