Far from the South, Confederate Statues Debate Rages

While Elgin is not near any Confederate monuments, the topic is of great interest at Elgin Community College.

The school’s Spartan Auditorium was at capacity recently with students, staff, faculty and visitors listening to ECC history professors talk about Confederate symbols, such as monuments and the flag.

All four speakers agreed: the symbols were representative of white supremacy, even more so as they play key roles in incidents such as last month’s protests in Charlottesville, Va.

“These are non-controversial statements among historians,” ECC history professor Antonio Ramirez said.
