Free Tuition Would Open College to Many

Last month, Gov. Andrew Cuomo made a groundbreaking proposal that would extend access to a college education for many New Yorkers. The Excelsior Scholarship, the first of its kind in the nation, would provide free tuition to New Yorkers from households making up to $125,000 per year at all SUNY and CUNY two- and four-year colleges.

As president of Westchester Community College, I support this proposal. By 2020, 69 percent of jobs in New York State will require some college, but increases in college costs are putting a degree beyond the reach of more and more families.
