Half of NC Community Colleges Miss Out on Aid

A new study says more than half of the state’s community college students are missing out on federal education loans.

Gaston College students are among those, but leaders at the institution say there’s a common-sense reason and that local students have financial aid options that are more fiscally sound.

An assessment of federal student loan participation at community colleges across the country is explored in the “States of Denial” study conducted by The Institute for College Access & Success. It says 53 percent of community college students in North Carolina did not have access to federal student loans in 2015-16.
