The belief that an education is the path to upward mobility lies at the heart of the American dream. But you’d never guess that from looking at Donald Trump’s proposed budget for the 2018 fiscal year. Instead of helping low-income college students, Trump’s plan would kill or severely water down federal financial aid guidelines that thousands of poor and minority students depend on as they strive to achieve a college education and move toward a successful future.
Trump’s plan would shutter federal agencies such as the Department of Education Office for Civil Rights and slash funding for federal work-study programs, Pell Grant Reserves and student loan subsidies by $143 billion over the next decade.
