NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee State University and radio host Tom Joyner are getting together to encourage community college graduates to attend the university and teach in Memphis and Nashville after graduation.
The university said the effort is designed to get more students interested in science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM. In a news release from the university, Tennessee State President Glenda Glover said Memphis and Nashville schools are in need of STEM teachers.
The initiative will offer full scholarships to students graduating from Southwest Tennessee, Nashville State, Volunteer State, Motlow State and Columbia State.
The Tom Joyner Foundation will provide 75 percent of the scholarship funds, with the rest coming from the National Science Foundation-funded Tiger Teach Initiative and Tennessee State’s Office of Community College Initiatives.
