Alabama College Official Says She Was Suspended for Investigating Corruption

by The Associated Press

A suspended official of an Alabama community college says she was targeted for termination because she investigated corruption.

Lisa Burks has been suspended from her role as the vice president for human resources at Coastal Alabama Community College since November. WALA-TV reports her case was heard Monday at an administrative hearing. Burks’ attorney, Tom Loper, argued that college officials acted against Burks after she and others began investigating corruption at the request of former President Gary Branch.

College officials say Burks was targeted for termination for failing to perform her duties and submitting a falsified document. College Police Chief Christopher Johnson also is on leave and targeted for dismissal. He testified Monday that the investigation uncovered a trail of corruption and was ordered shut down by system Chancellor Jimmy Baker.
