Dr. William Mullaney Named President of SUNY Corning Community College

The Regional Board of Trustees at State University of New York (SUNY) Corning Community College has named Dr. William Mullaney its seventh president. He will begin his duties on July 1.

“Dr. Mullaney brings a wealth of experience to the college and will be a strong partner with the community,” board of trustees chair Carl H. Blowers said in a news release. “He has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the community college vision, illustrated his innovative spirit and commitment to meeting workforce needs, and he has a history of serving as a passionate advocate and champion for student success.”

Currently, Mullaney is vice president of academic affairs at Bergen Community College. He previously was assistant to the executive vice chancellor at the Maricopa Community Colleges District Office.

During his time at Bergen, Mullaney has worked with stakeholders to increase the graduation rate by 7 percent over a three-year period. He worked with local high schools to open the community college’s first early college programs that allows students to earn a college degree or complete college courses while still in high school.

Mullaney was selected from a pool of over 50 candidates by a search committee led by board of trustees vice chair Nancy Wightman, and included trustee members, alumni administrators, students, faculty and community members, according to the Star Gazette.

The Corning Community College board and the SUNY board of trustees both unanimously voted to approve Mullaney’s appointment.

“I am honored to have been selected to lead SUNY Corning Community College as its next president,” Mullaney said. “I look forward to carrying on the legacy of innovation and distinction that Kate (Douglas) has embraced at SUNY CCC and in service to meeting the educational and workforce needs of the region.”

Mullaney received a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Virginia, a master’s degree in literature from the University of California at San Diego and a Ph.D. in English from Tulane University.
