Free Community College Makes Sense

When a student of mine at Pima Community College — we’ll call him John — recently completed his FAFSA, the federal form necessary to receive financial aid from the federal government, he was surprised to find out that he didn’t qualify for any grants. He is not an undocumented student, he is not a convicted felon, he has good grades.

His problem? John’s parents both work in low- to medium-wage jobs, pay their taxes, but made more than the allowable amount (generally over $55,000 depending on a number of factors).
