LaGuardia to Host Film Screening Before 5th Annual Black Lives Matter Summit

In advance of LaGuardia Community College’s 5th annual Black Lives Matter Summit, which will take place 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 18, summit organizers have invited the public to a film screening and Q&A that honors the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

The film, “The Blood is at the Doorstep” will be shown on Wednesday, April 10 at 2:30 p.m. in the M-Building. Created by Erik Ljung, the film is a documentary exploring the fatal police shooting of Dontre Hamilton, a 31-year-old unarmed Black man who was diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Hamilton was shot 14 times and killed by Milwaukee police. Hamilton’s family is currently on a quest for answers, justice and reform as the investigation finalizes.

A discussion and Q&A session with two members of Hamilton’s family will follow the showing.

The 5th annual Black Lives Matter Summit is open to anyone “who believes in the power of activism, creativity and intellect to overcome justice,” according to the Black Lives Matter Summit website.

This day-long summit, with the theme of “Theory, Action and Expression for Today’s Student” will focus on the issues of inequality that people of color experience in today’s society and will address the perceptions, analyze possibilities and encourage progress through definitive actions that support the new generation of leaders engaged in the fight for social justice, the summit’s website said.

The summit will take place in LaGuardia’s Little Theater and will feature keynote addresses by Shaun King, a prominent Black Lives Matter activist, and Talib Kweli, a hip-hop artist, social activist and entrepreneur. King is scheduled to speak at 10:45 p.m. and Kweli is scheduled to speak at 2:15 p.m.

In addition, there will be breakout discussions on the following topics: Black Girl Magic: Melanated Mental Health, Janelle Monae’s Afro-Futurism Vision, Literary Justice and Education, Walking the Talk: Activism in Everyday Life and Youth in Activism — A Roundtable.
