Merger of Colleges Remains on Hold

Nearly three months following the announcement that the planned merger among three east Alabama community colleges, including Opelika’s Southern Union State Community College, was indefinitely postponed, officials say little has changed in respect to the once all-but-certain consolidation.

“The consolidation is indefinitely paused,” said Trish Jones, governmental and academic affairs coordinator for the Alabama Community College System, when asked for an update on plans to consolidate Southern Union, Central Alabama Community College and Chattahoochee Valley Community College.
