Will Iowa Follow Free College Trend?

On May 8, Maryland became the 17th U.S. state to approve free community college in some form. That state will offer tuition-free education to students within two years of earning their high school diploma or GED.

Iowa Central Community College President Dan Kinney isn’t sure when Iowa may join the growing list, and isn’t sure it should.

“I wish I could tell you exactly, if and when that happens. It is being looked at,” he said. “We have to think about accessibility, we have to look at the workforce. Right here in Storm Lake, we have to look at what we can do when it comes. We will have to expand what we are doing in places like Storm Lake to keep our young people in rural America.”
